CHAPTER TEN

Afew days later when Harry was hunting for cock-a-bullies in the deep drain outside the tent he was surprised to see a great black car pull up. It was driven by a man wearing a shiny peaked hat and a nice black jacket and shining boots. He found out later that it was called livery. The driver went to the rear door and opened it. A small man wearing a brown fur-trimmed coat and a black, round sort of hat climbed out of the car and looked around. He appeared quite startled when Harry's voice issued from the depths of the drain. 'Hello. It's a nice day isn't it?'

The man looked down. 'Hello young fellow. What's your name?'

'Harry Evans and I live at… here in the tent.' Force of habit died hard concerning old addresses.

'That's nice. And what do you want for Christmas, Harry?'

'A dog would be nice. 'Cos I've got no one to play with here.'

'Yes,' said the man. 'I suppose that would be nice, Harry. Would you like me to get you one?'

'Gee,' said Harry. 'That would be really nice.' Remembering his manners he added, 'Thank you very much.'

The man said no more and walked down the road to the manager's shed. The dredge manager came running up the hill out of breath, apologizing for not being there to welcome the man.

He walked all around the place and talked to a lot of the men who seemed to be very polite to him, then he climbed back into the nice car and the driver shut the door carefully behind him then drove off.

Harry stood beside the ditch and waved. The man smiled to him but didn't bother to wave. He must have been a very busy man, thought Harry as he climbed back into the ditch to try and catch another tadpole. The cock-a-bullies weren't having any joy in being caught that day.

They were sitting having tea that night when Harry's dad happened to mention that one of the big wigs of the company had arrived that afternoon to inspect progress on the dredge.

Harry piped up and said that the man had possum skin on his coat. 'Oh,' said his father, 'and how did you know that?'

'Cos he came and talked to me when I was trying to catch some tadpoles in the ditch.'

'Really? And what did he say?'

'He said he was going to get me a dog. He had a nice big shiny car too.'

'Harry,' said his father, you mustn't believe everything that people say to you. He is a very busy man and I'm afraid he's too busy to waste time getting a little boy like you a thing like a dog. Now you mustn't be disappointed, because I really don't think you're going to get anything. Now just forget about it. I'm sorry, Harry, but people just say things like that on the spur of the moment.'

Harry's lower lip trembled. He had seemed such a nice man and Harry was sure he wouldn't let him down.
